Life was always a bit better if you could paint your world in darkness, right? Then, you wouldn’t have to see anything. You wouldn’t have to fear as much. Maybe if life was like that normally and everyone was under that constant fear and pressure, then things probably wouldn’t be as complex as they always seemed to be. Sage Xing ran forward as fast as he could, his eyes shone brightly with tears streaming down his face.
It wasn’t fair, was it? Was it fair that he was left behind while everyone else had an honor to be in the family? Everyone else in the family had the curse that he yearned so much to have. He hated it! He simply hated it! Why was he the one who was alone in the end? Everything that he seemed to be doing now seemed to be rather hopeless and too painful to even accept. He didn’t want to continue like this. He didn’t want to continue down a road and path that he knew would end in failure. He had no choice, however, but to continue on down that path for his mother’s sake. She wouldn’t let him quit and give up. She was too determined to have him become the head of the family.
In all honestly, he really didn’t quite want that… but on the other hand, he secretly wished that he’d have that power as well. It was a battle that he’d have in his mind. He’d want to bring honor to his family and figured his mother would be proud if he could lead the family. Then again, it was stressful to have that huge of a burden resting on his shoulders. It was scary how you could mess things up for everyone if you screwed up as the leader. He didn’t want to be known as the great leader who messed up. He wanted to be respected and most of all he wanted to be revered by everyone.
It seemed that he lost that though when his half-sister was born. It was pointless even trying to compete when he wasn’t special anymore. He admitted that he was quite bitter, but he didn’t care. He felt that he deserved that position more than her. Not only was he his father’s only son, but he was the first born! Shouldn’t he have that right!? Shouldn’t he have been born into that position and above his sister. No… That wasn’t how things worked in the Xing family. He wasn’t gifted with the family curse. He was an outsider, an outcast, and a freak.
He continued to run further and further. He just wanted to get out of that house. He couldn’t stand being there anymore. It was too hard to be trapped in his house for so long. He wished that he were never born to such a cursed fate. He wished that he could be special for once in his life. He wished that he wouldn’t have to shoulder his mother’s desperation to make him the family leader. He wished that he didn’t have such a huge burden on his shoulders.
He stopped himself when he reached the park and he let out deep breaths of air as he gasped in and out, in and out. No one seemed to be there at this time of morning since it was fairly early. He figured that he’d be safe enough to just sit there and cry. He adjusted his glasses carefully and pulled them off his face to clean them after sitting down on a swing. After he cleared them up, he placed them carefully on his face again and he gripped the chains on the swing and pushed himself of the ground. “Why?” He kicked the ground and pushed himself backwards. He kicked his legs to make him move higher. “Why?” He repeated to himself as he found himself swinging higher and higher.
He found himself coming here early at times to vent before school. It seemed to be an easier way for him to cry out his emotions before the day officially started. He figured that no one would notice or miss his vanished presence. After all, he wasn’t special. There was honestly little need for anyone to want to keep track of him. He was the outcast of his family in his own eyes and he hated himself for it. He kept swinging until he finally just let go while swinging forward to feel himself falling now off the swing and into the mulch.
He wiped his eyes gently and picked himself back up. It didn’t hurt that badly. He had done this many times when he was younger. Nowadays, he seemed to do this to test his pain tolerance. In a twisted way he found it to be a fun way to help him. After all, the bullies couldn’t hurt him if he found himself numbed and used to the pain. Heck, maybe they’d stop eventually if he could find some way to completely enjoy the pain and become a masochist. He wondered what they would say to him then. What would those terrible bullies say? He laughed loudly to himself and staggered over to a planter as he plopped himself down on the cement weakly. A tree was planted on it and was surrounded by many different flowers.
What caught his interest the most was a flower that reminded him of himself. It was withering away, while the other flowers seemed to not be. It seemed to not get as much sunlight as the other ones and was cast in the tree’s shadow. It seemed like there was no place for this flower and he figured that it would fade away too just like he slowly was. He pulled his legs against his chest in a comfortable position as he sat and he just stared at it and smiled gently. “You must know exactly how I feel,” He said rather calmly. “Isolated from the rest, slowly being forgotten and fading from people’s memories.” He reached out as though he was going to touch it; but he held himself back. Was he scared to break the flower by touching it!? That was so silly! Then again, he felt as though he would break too if touched by someone he didn’t know. He was after all keeping a frozen barrier around him to keep others out. He knew the flower didn’t have feelings, but he also felt a sense of respect for it as well and found himself not wanting to see it die.
He let himself move and lay on his back on the planter and his dark black hair seemed to fall all over the place. He placed his hand over his face to block out the sun. “Just an hour more before I need to go to class,” He said gently. He figured he could take a small nap here maybe and that no one would notice, care, or even come to bother him. He just felt as though he’d be forgotten forever. He was invisible to most people anyways, so why would anyone come to find him now? “One day… I’ll find the courage…. I’ll find it and blossom even brighter than anyone else,” he whispered as he let a small smile rest on his face as he found himself drifting off into a small nap outside in the park before he would need to take off to get to school on time.

Lien sat in her room quietly with a book in her hands. Her violet eyes were focusing on the words that existed on the page. A soft scowl echoed on her small mouth as she continued reading quietly. Her petite form was dressed in a white qui pao with a gold dragon design coming up from the skirt of it. Her wavy blonde hair was pulled back into a side ponytail with a white hair tie. Some strands of hair hung loose around her face which only added to the teen’s childish features.
The young Xing family leader heard a loud booming sound come from down the hall. It caught her attention and made her set her book down long enough to go investigate what was going on outside of her bedroom. Slowly she pushed the door open just in time to see the retreating form of her elder brother turn towards the exit of the large house. Her curiosity seemed to be getting the better of her because she found herself following behind the elder Xing as he ventured out of the house. She was quiet in her movements and made sure that she kept a good distance from him. The last thing she wanted was for Sage to turn around and treat her like a child.
That was often how most people tried to treat Lien. They attempted to make it appear like she was a wounded child who had no way of knowing where to go in her young life. Often she was able to put them in their place though. She was the head of the Xing family, responsible for all their actions and seeing that the family was taken care of. It had not been her birth right in terms of ranking. She was the second born child of her father’s, but was possessed by the spirit of the zodiac’s “god.” That was the whole of her existence it seemed.
So many people were amazed at her abilities at such a young age. Lien tended to matters most adults could not handle. While she loved her status and power over others, it did not change the fact that she secretly wished to be a normal child sometimes. Sure she could handle issues without a single problem most of the time. She was also looked at like a natural leader who had such a bright future ahead of her it did not stop her from wanting something else.
Lien was actually envious of her elder brother. He had choices of what he wanted to do in his life. He was not weighed down by the hopes and desires of the family, nor was he haunted by the black cloud that consumed the members of the zodiac. He was fortunate in ways that the young blonde could only dream of and a parent behind him to be a guide as well.
When the small fourteen years old finally came out of her thoughts she found herself at the park. Her brother seemed to be nowhere around, or at least not in her line of vision. A loud crack of thunder echoed through her ears as her vision shot up to the sky. The violet orbs on her face widened with shock and fear as Lien took notice of the suddenly overcast sky. Rain began to pour down from the heavens and started to pelt her small body with its droplets. She could fear her body starting to shake from both fear and the cold liquid.
She looked around franticly for her sibling. She happened to spot him sitting on a park bench, although she could only see the back of his form. Another crack of thunder sent a scream from her mouth as she bolted in the direction of Sage. Her entire form was shaking with fear as she grew closer to him with each step. ”Onii-sama!!” The word seem to shoot out of her mouth as she continued towards the elder Xing with nothing but a look of fear in her eyes as she drew closer and closer to him. Sage was the only thing that she could cling to for salvation at this point. She was really nothing more than a scared child at the current time.

He frowned slightly when he had heard the thunder booming in the sky. It wasn’t that that seemed to bother him. More or less it was the rain that was now beginning to increase in speed as it fell down onto his cheeks. Disgusting. He hated how cold the rain was to the touch, and what was even more disgusting was that a lot of the rain tended to carry pollution. He had watched a few different shows in his childhood about rain and the repetitious cycle that it seemed to follow. If the rain had feelings, he figured that it would be rather boring for the rain to go through the same thing constantly.
It seemed that a lot of people needed to repeat things over and over in life in order to keep things stable. Sage was the type of person to do different things when he could to change things up. It would make things less depressing for him in the long run and he’d be able to have something new to talk about if he were to approach anyone. He smiled gently and let his chocolate gaze open to stare up at the dark clouds. He was thankful that his glasses were on his face because a raindrop hit the lens of his glasses just as he had opened his eyes. It would have been very painful for him if it had landed directly in his eyes.
That was another thing that the male greatly disliked about the rain. It fogged up his glasses and made his vision smudged and he hated that. He looked up at the sky to feel the rain pelt down a bit quicker now until it began to fall down into a downpour of rain. “Just great,” he hissed.
When he heard a scream and a familiar voice he jumped slightly and felt his heart lurch like crazy. Why? Why was something like this happening now? It just had to happen to him of all people. He could never understand why she was one of the few people who would notice him. He figured it was because she had to be in charge of the family. He hated that! He didn’t want her to know his location or to even have the girl around him. However, he always had to play things off rather cool so that he wouldn’t be scolded or in trouble with his mother.
His mother’s rage was rather terrifying. If he got kicked out of the estate he’d have no place to turn to. His own mother wouldn’t even take him in. That was how disgusting he would be if he disgraced her by harming the girl who took his place. He wrinkled his nose when he looked in her direction as she ran towards him. He figured it was the usual. She was terrified of thunderstorms.
It simply puzzled him beyond all belief that she would turn to him at a situation like this. She should know by now and at her age what she had stolen from him. Did she follow him around to mock him!? Did she follow him around to rub it in that he wasn’t as special as she was? He just didn’t understand her need to follow him around like a little lost puppy. He hated it. She looked rather fearful and he wanted to laugh at it, but he had to hold back his laughter. Now wasn’t the appropriate time to laugh. Surely if he did, he would find himself in a lot of trouble later.
He felt anger rise in him as he grabbed at the girl to hold her off from hugging him. “Why do you insist to follow me around?” His tone was very demanding now as to he was frustrated at her presence. He just didn’t understand this girl. He figured that he never would. “You should be back at home. Not following me around… I have school in a bit anyways.” He bit down on his lower lip. He did feel a little bad for her, so he figured he’d probably have to drop her off home so she wouldn’t get lost trying to find her way back to the estate. With her luck, he figured that she’d probably wander off that the Sohma estate and cause a lot of trouble there. He figured at that point he’d have to go and rescue her.
Even though he wasn’t noticed much, it seemed that he was responsible for any wrong things that his sister did. He loathed her for that. He was the older brother, so in turn if she didn’t do well he would more than likely get most of the blame for it. After all, he wasn’t special and gifted. He was just a failure in his own family’s eyes. He exhaled a deep breath and then crouched down to be eye level with her. “Did you follow me out here….Or are you genuinely lost?” He jumped at a loud crack of thunder and fell backwards into the ground to splash into a puddle of mud. Disgusting! There was no way he’d be able to go to school dressed the way he was now.
He figured that he looked such a mess it would probably get the girl to laugh and not focus so much on the weather. If that worked, he figured that he wasn’t doing too bad of a job. At least he wouldn’t fail so much at things. He wanted to be able to succeed, but sometimes he wasn’t quite sure what he truly wanted to succeed in, so he always just did what he thought would send him down on that path. He couldn’t have too much control in his life because of his mother’s expectations and constant watchful eye. This was the best that he could do after all. He knew that right now though, his main duty would be to cheer up his half-sister; much to his disliking and to her home safe and sound before the house would flip upside down at her disappearance.

She hated thunder storms. There was no other phrase that could really describe what was going through her mind. All she wanted to do was curl up in a ball and cry. Having her brother there did nothing to bring her comfort. Then again what reason should he have to do that anyway? He made it seem like she was a lost puppy or something, when in truth she knew far more than even he did about everything that was going on in the family. They lived two separate lives that hardly ever connected. Honestly she didn’t blame him for the hate that was in his heart. Lien took away his birth right after all.
It wasn’t her choice to be born as “god.” Things just seemed to end up that way for her when she was created. The curse was something that so many looked upon with pride in the Xing family like it was the ultimate gift of salvation that continued to rule over them. Well for those who didn’t bear the burden of transformations, or keeping things under control within the family it may have been a blessing, they weren’t the strange ones though.
Her small body shook from the cold touch of the rain. Tears were starting to come to her eyes as she stared up at Sage. Her violet orbs shimmered brightly with the salty liquid that wanted to spill out of her eye sockets. All the flashes of that night would run through her mind whenever storms were taking place. She hated remembering the car accident and how both of her parents were dead, only to leave a child in charge of everything. It was starting to turn into a very bad day already.
Lien watched as her sibling fell in the mud, some of the brown goop getting on her perfect white outfit. She was splattered with the dirt and didn’t care. The fourteen year old was good at handling stress and keeping her patience about things, still it did not change the fact that she was acting like a small child. Normally she was so mature for her age. She had to be though, when you are the one making choices for an entire family everything you do effects everyone else. She couldn’t be a child anymore even if she wanted to, too many relied on her to allow for such freedom.
Sage could never understand the pressure she felt sometimes. To know that every little thing you do has more effects on others than yourself. Looking up at her brother the young blonde realized something, she must look like an idiot to her brother. She couldn’t crack in front of him, not when he is trying to take everything from her. Still she wanted to reach up to him and have him to lean on in times like this. She should’ve known that he would just push her away like always.
The rain began to lighten up which left her covered in water and mud. Her hair was clinging to her face and shoulders. All she wanted was to go home and get a bath. When Sage started to accuse her of things she just sighed and began to wipe the tears from her eyes. The familiar scowl placed itself back on her small mouth as she turned away from him. ”My reason for being out here is none of your business Onii-sama. Just take me back home please.” Her words were assertive just like they always were. She seemed to be back to her old self without a single problem now that the thunder had passed.

He felt that he had way more experience compared to her when it came to any situation that the family could run into. He felt disgusted that all the power of the family was basically given to a female who was still only a child to him and was far younger than him as well. It wasn’t fair that she got to be special. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t let that grudge go and was always bitter towards her and other members of the family.
He bit his lower lip as he felt his hands sink into the mud. It was disgusting. He clearly felt like he was filthy, but it was amusing to him as well that Lien was also covered in mud too from the rain. He figured that he would get blamed for it of course if she decided to tell everyone that he had frightened her and led her away. Of course, that would probably quickly make him a bigger out caste to his family which he didn’t want at all. In truth, all that Sage seemed to want was to be accepted. He felt that in this family he probably never would be.
He sighed slightly as he wondered if maybe the Sohma’s had someone going through similar problems that he was. He doubted greatly that they did and found himself feeling even more alone. Maybe it was a burden that only he could carry; the burden of not being accepted by anyone for the most part. He remembered when he was little when he had so much love and acceptance. He remembered how people would tell and praise him for being special and being the first son who would succeed over the family. He had been so special back then. Those days seemed like a dream to him now. They were times that would only exist in his memories after all because no one else would acknowledge that they had said those things with a new special child in the family. After all, he was the forgotten first born son of the Xing family.
Sometimes Sage wondered if anyone would notice if he just vanished and disappeared. He wondered if no one would even notice his presence being gone. He figured in the long run they would only find out when they needed an empty room and then they would find themselves stumbling upon his room that was cluttered with his belongings. Sometimes he would just sit in there for long periods of time and he would let himself wait to see if someone would notice him. In truth, few people did. He figured that Lien had no idea how it felt to live a life alone where your own family barely recognized or knew who you were. It was depressing. It was a life that Sage wouldn’t wish on anyone else.
When the storm had finally passed he noticed the change in the girl’s personality and he rolled his eyes. It figured that she’d revert back to her old self as soon as her weakness was gone. He honestly just wanted to surround himself in silence and just keep himself locked away from everyone. However, he couldn’t escape the fact that he still had school. He knew that he was probably going to be bullied again for how he acted towards people in school. He would give them the same attitude over and over again but they would never get his message that he wasn’t going to show them emotion. He’d just continue to act like he didn’t care at all.
He stood up and brushed off as much mud as he could onto the ground and he turned towards his half-sister. She seemed to give him an attitude and he scoffed a bit. “Really? I think you owe me an explanation. I have a strange feeling that you were stalking me out here…” He trailed off in thought. It would be like her to try and keep tabs on him and what he was doing. He figured that even though he wasn’t part of the cursed family that he did seem to act up a lot more than anyone seemed to. Maybe he just required a lot more effort because he didn’t like to follow orders that were given by other people; especially by Lien.
He adjusted his glasses and was careful not to touch the lens. He couldn’t even dry them off on his shirt because it was covered in mud. He sighed weakly. “I guess I have no choice but to take you home with me. After all, I do need to get cleaned up for school again.” He put his hands behind his head casually and walked right past Lien as though he didn’t notice her presence. It was a typical big brother behavior he seemed to think. He’d seen something like this happen in an kawaiidesunii before he thought, or maybe it was on a TV show he liked to watch. “Keep up if you can, squirt.” He smirked now. That was an amusing nickname for her. He figured that he couldn’t use it in front of the adults, but when it was just them alone it felt like a lot of fun to just tease her over and over again to see if she’d react. He continued to walk as he listened for her to follow and probably react to be called a squirt by him.

Lien glared at her brother when he called her squirt. There was nothing that annoyed her more than her height being commented on. Her brother knew that and still had the nerve to call her that. She sighed and just followed him as he headed in the direction of home. Sometimes Sage could be such a pain in the butt.
The walk home seemed to be longer than when she headed to the park following her older sibling. This morning was being long and miserable so far. So today this was going to be a rather intresting day. She needed to go to school soon as well, although things were not going to be very fun. Sittin in class for hours on end was the last thing that she enjoyed doing. Even though she liked to learn new things, a class enviorment was not a place to be for her.
Lien has always been a very antisocial child. She never really felt the need for much company growing up. Mainly because her parents taught her to be self relient from a very early age, which sadly translated to something very literal for her. Still the young teen could feel a tired feeling growing in her legs as the Xing complex came into view. A sense of releif began to fill her as they drew closer and closer to their home. "Its about time we got home. That walk was way too long."
