She didn’t think she’d miss out on all too much as long as she continued to take down all of the different notes on the board. She figured that if she didn’t understand completely that she could always ask Shigure or Kyo for some advice on this class. As well as Yuki seemed to take notes, his cooking seemed to be lacking very greatly, so she figured that she couldn’t get too much help from him unless she missed notes when it came to her Home Economics class.
She always loved to learn new and different things! Tohru found herself to be a very good cook when she knew exactly what she was doing and had cooked the food for a long period of time. This class had a bad habit of being a bit challenging at times when it came to new dishes to learn. The recipes were fairly easy to follow, but if you messed up the timing for something whether it was cooking or adding in the flavor it risked destroying the flavor of the dish. She was always a tad nervous when it came to trying something new like this, but she was absolutely determined to not give up.
She copied down the notes on the board as quickly as she could as she let her thoughts drift off as she zoned out thinking about the Sohma’s. She really wanted to be able to help them more than anything! She knew that they all greatly disliked the curse that was upon their family and she wanted to help them break it. She smiled with her spaced out expression as she thought back to when she had first found out about the curse! Wow was it quite shocking to her! She absolutely terrified that her memories had a chance of being suppressed. It wasn’t the fact that she was scared because of the information she knew was precious. It was because she didn’t want to lose her friendships with each of the different members from the Sohma family that she had come across. Those friendships were all very precious and dear to her heart and she didn’t want to risk the chance of losing them.
She finished taking the notes and to her surprise class was going to be done where they had to make what they had seen demonstrated. She had totally spaced out during the entire presentation and had nothing but her notes to go off of. She figured it wouldn’t be too hard to make. From the title and smell of it she knew that it was something she had never made before and was definitely foreign to her. However, she wasn’t going to let that stop her from trying her best.
She quickly found herself washing her hands and getting out all the pans and materials needed to make the dish. The ingredients at each station were already placed earlier for the students to get the amounts that they needed. Tohru quickly gathered her items and found herself at a loss after setting a pan to boil the water. She looked around to see if she could catch on to someone else’s cooking in order to get a fairly good example and she glanced back at her sheet. She figured since everyone had their own station to themselves that this was most definitely a pop quiz for a grade. She figured that if she could cook something that was at least edible that she could pass with at least a C average.
She flipped to the next page of the recipe and started to add ingredients in one after another. She then found herself working with a fryer. She would normally use a skillet to cook the food through as opposed to a fryer most of the times so she didn’t have too much knowledge of what would happen if she put certain things into it. She jumped slightly in unease and let out a small squeak when she dropped some of the breaded shrimp they were given into it to cook it.
She wondered slightly what Kyo and Yuki were doing and found herself lost and staring into the fryer as she forgot about the pan that she had set to boil and had added some ingredients to. She smiled as she figured that Yuki was probably off doing some activities for student council, Kyo was probably off in another class or trying to avoid people, and Shigure was definitely at home working on one of his novels that he would keep from his editor till the last possible moment in order to tease her. Tohru wondered why he did that, but she figured that Shigure obviously had his reasons to hold his work back from his editor.
In the time it took her to think those thoughts, the water had boiled and because she had filled it a little too much the water started leaking and spraying out from the lid and it was boiling hot! Tohru jumped into focus as she turned to see the mess that was before her with the water over boiling and she found herself breaking into a quick panic! “A-Ah! I… I’ve got this no worries!” She found herself running towards the stove after pulling up the finished shrimp from the fryer in order to turn it off as quickly as she possibly could. When she had managed to get the water to stop bubbling she lifted the lid to see the ingredients burned to the bottom of the pan and some still floating and she could feel the heat coming from the pan. She wondered if the teacher would probably scold her or keep her after school to talk about how she had messed up. She was sure that she would be able to pay more attention if shown a second time around. If anything, she was grateful that she didn’t catch the stove on fire!

Words! 1110 Tagged! Tohru Notes! I should probably get a scrolling format. Sometimes it wasn't easy being relatively new to a place. Setsuko Harude was new to this school. She was new to her job. She was new to Japan. It was only the name and language that her japanese father had given her which allowed her to fit in where she was almost effortlessly. Setsuko had taken up the first teaching job at this school that was available to her. She had really hoped to land a job teaching language and writing but most of those filled quickly. Even though school had started not too long ago, she would have needed a teacher to drop out. That hadn't happened too frequently. So she became the Home Economics teacher. It wasn't a required class, as much as it should have been. Without her, they could have done without. But here she was, building both men and women with important skills needed to run a home.
The class was going to be more hands on then it was going to be lectures. Things like balancing a checkbook or proper use of tools in the kitchen could be lectured. Setsuko spoke with ease as she wrote conversions on the board before her. Her hands getting a light dusting of chalk. It was amazing that they still had chalk boards these days. Setsuko hated using chalk. The substance made her hands feel all clamy and at the end of the day, they would never feel just right.
At one final squeak of the chalk, the students were relased into the kitchen to create a dish where they would need to work with converting a recipe to a fourth of what it was currently. She had picked something large out just for this. In retrospect, she probably should have picked out something that a majority of the students had some familiarity with instead of one of the many chinese dishes that she had been used to making in her youth. She knew a lot of dishes, but the ones that came from home were alway her favourites.
The students started off in their lab. As usual, Setsuko would take her seat behind her desk and observe them from afar until about five minutes were up. At that time she would get up and check the status of all of them. Unless a student had come up to her first and asked a question. She had found that a lot of the students didn't like asking for her help. A pity there; she was a teacher. It was her her job to help the students learn, even if she tended to react a bit harshly to the stupidest of questions. The annoyance at explaining something multiple times was just shown by her more than by other teachers. It was their own fault for not paying attention by the fifth time she had to repeat herself on a subject. Setsuko wanted her students to pass, but she's seen plenty of people run a household just fine who hadn't.
With a chalky hand leaning upon her face, her attention was captured by one student in particular. She was the one that she had heard rumors about among her distanced family. This girl was Tohru Honda. She was the only person outside of the Sohma family to know of the curse and remain with her memory intact. That was all she had been told. Nothing seemed special about this girl. She was an airhead. She often messed up in the labs. She always spaced out. Overall, she was a failure. What kind of Sohma would allow this girl into their family?
The teacher rose from her desk after her usual five minutes. A lot of students seemed to be faring well with the step-by-step instructions that she had laid out for them to use. It was apparent from across the room that Tohru had been struggling all along. She probably spaced out again. Setsuko would make her way to her last. There was no tolerance for people that did not pay attention to her lessons. Besides, there were other people in the class that needed the teacher's help. It would have left very little room to help other students had she gone to help Tohru out first.
There was something that she found she needed to correct for most of the students that she had in her small kitchen lab. There was a small math error here and a pot that needed to be boiling there. Setsuko had learned in her first day as a teacher that there were just some students who could not grasp the concept of cooking. Some people were just not born to cook. She could understand that. Her father was never a good cook either. It was part of the reason why she had picked up cooking at a young age. She would grade these people on their own improvement. However, had they then turned around and wasted a decent amout of food that they had made, she would mark them down in a heart beat. Even if the student wouldn't eat the food, there was always somebody else who would. If they gave it to her, she would find somebody, or some animal, on the street to eat it.
Setsuko saw a potential in other students. It had come to her attention that Tohru could cook. It had come to her attention that Tohru could cool quite well when given a dish and utensils that she knew how to use. So Setsuko sought to push her students. They needed to expand from their own world and experiance foods and techniques they had never done so before. A sudden shout from the other side of the room soon had Setsuko gliding through the kitchen towards the stove of Tohru. Things were about to get bad and fast. Or, at least Setsuko had thought they were. Her speed slowed down at the pot being contained and instead she walked up to young miss Tohru Honda. "Cooking is not something you can set and forget," she mumbled, arms crossed before her chest to show the disapointment she had in the girl. "We're going to clean this up together after school and you and I are going to stay here until you get this right." This was the chance that she needed in order to get the girl alone. For a brief moment the teacher's hard gaze had softened. Perhaps she had gotten a bit ahead of herself. "Are you hurt?" That was the main question she needed to ask. Pots were replaceable. Students were not.

She knew that she didn’t do as well as she had expected herself to do. She had wanted to try her best to learn the skills because she wanted to be able to impress Kyo, Yuki, and Shigure back at home with a nice meal. It just seemed that she had spaced out and didn’t catch all the important steps that needed to be carried out in order to complete the meal. She felt her cheeks grow a deep dark red as she was clearly embarrassed.
She was always known to do embarrassing things, but she figured that Hana and Arisa would probably find some way to deal with the people who would try to spread rumors about her mess up all over the school. Then, if they couldn’t get it done she was positive that Kyo and Yuki would find some way to bring the attention on them or stop it themselves. They were all true friends to her and they were always way too kind. Tohru felt as though she was blessed to have them more than anything. It truly felt like her mother was watching over her and making sure that she’d meet some nice friends to help her to accomplish her goal.
The mess had happened way too fast, but it ended just as quickly. She was sure that she’d get a scolding from Kyo for her behavior. He would probably lecture her to stop spacing out and to pay attention more so that she didn’t do such stupid things. She didn’t mind his lectures though. She knew in the end that he was just really worried about her and when they didn’t have all their classes together there was no way she could be looked after constantly. Tohru didn’t honestly think that she needed that. More or less, she felt as though she just needed someone to help snap her back into focus when her thoughts would trail off. She was sure that if someone could help her with that that she’d be able to succeed a bit more.
She dipped her head down to avoid the gazes of the students in the class who were watching. She felt uneasy as she kept feeling the stares and hearing the whispers of some of the students nearby. She could tell which ones were the fans of Yuki for they uttered his name saying that she deserved it for talking to the Prince. She felt herself tense up as she waited for the teacher to scold her. Her uniform was a tad wet, but she knew that it would try and she figured that it wasn’t all that bad. She could make it through the rest of the day! She was positive!
She looked up slightly when the teacher had come over to lecture her about her spacing out again. It was usually the same thing that caused her to mess up in class. “I… I’m sorry.” Tohru winced slightly as she heard her voice crack from how nervous she was. Everyone had seemed to drop what they were doing to pay attention to what seemed to be going on at Tohru’s work station for the class. She felt herself grow more and more uneasy, but she kept a warm smile on her face. Even though she could be sad and cry about it, she figured that this would lead her to an experience where she could learn to better her skills and improve as a person altogether. She wanted to learn and it just so happened that Tohru learned best through trial and error.
“I… I can clean up the mess now!” Her voice rang optimistically. There was only about fifteen or twenty minutes left of school for the day and she figured that she could clean it up quickly so that she could walk home with Kyo and Yuki if they weren’t busy doing other things. If anything, Kyo was the one to wait for her since Yuki usually found himself being dragged away by Student Council activities. Tohru wished that she could walk together with them home, but it seemed to work better that the two of them weren’t together at all times because of how violent they could get when they argued with one another. She hated to see when they fought each other. She was always worried that they would end up becoming seriously hurt and she would always want to do something to stop them.
She waved her hands slightly as though she were a bit panicked. “I-I’m fine, honest!” She laughed nervously. Her hand had gotten a little burned from the hot water and the heated metal, but it honestly wasn’t all that bad to her. She figured that if she could clean up the mess she could go home and quickly bandage her hand before Kyo would realize that she had gotten hurt in her Home Economics class. She wondered if the teacher would insist for her to wait till class was over in order to clean up the mess, and if that were to be the case then she would have no other choice but to listen to the teacher’s instructions.
